A chemical peel applies a solution to the skin to encourage the outer layer to shed and renew, revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath. They range from very light "lunchtime" peels to deeper treatments, and knowing what actually happens — during and after — takes most of the mystery and worry out of it.
During the treatment
The appointment itself is usually quick and calm. Most light and medium peels are very manageable, and your practitioner will talk you through each step.
- The skin is cleansed and prepped first
- The solution is applied and left on for a set time
- A mild tingling or warmth is normal and temporary
- The solution is neutralised or removed and skin is soothed
The days after
This is the part nobody warns you about: the flaking. It's completely normal and part of how a peel works, but it helps enormously to know it's coming.
- Some redness at first, a bit like mild sunburn
- Light flaking or peeling over the following days
- Keep skin hydrated and resist the urge to pick
- Fresh, brighter skin as the old surface sheds
Peeling skin off early can cause marks and irritation. Let it shed naturally, keep it moisturised, and wear sunscreen religiously — freshly revealed skin is especially vulnerable to the sun.
Planning your timing
Because of that flaking phase, timing matters. A little forethought means you're glowing when it counts, not peeling.
- Never book one just before a big event
- Allow a couple of weeks before anything important
- A short course spaced over time often works best
Once you know what to expect, a peel feels far less intimidating — just a short, controlled reset that leaves your skin looking brighter and smoother.
